Committee

Christine Marett (President)

I have been a member of the Jersey Junior Dog Handlers for 20 years, during which time I have successfully trained my dogs in show handling, obedience and agility. I am also an honorary life member of the association which has played a large part in mine and my family’s lives for the past 20 years.

I have been around dogs all my life as my father was the first and only Guide Dog owner in the Channel Islands for many years. A succession of Guide Dogs passed through our house and in addition to this my brother and I had a couple of Pembroke Corgis. I worked voluntarily for the Animal Shelter for three years on a Saturday and in school holidays where I was able to work with dogs as well as the cattery and the stray block. When I left school I went to work at the David Place Veterinary Hospital where I became one of the first two home trained veterinary nurses, working my way up from kennel maid to head nurse. I was there for 12 years before I left to have my two sons.

When we acquired our first family dog we joined the Juniors Handlers and I took on the position of secretary which I held for 13 years, 1991-2004. My two sons competed successfully locally, in the UK and Europe through this club and are both actively involved with the dog world now they have moved to the mainland.

I have represented the Channel Islands at Crufts with one of my dogs Taj in both the silver and gold Good Citizen teams and successfully competed at championship level in the UK with our kennel of Cesky Terriers.

Philippa Knight (Vice-President)

My family has had dogs for many years.  My parents had two West Highland White Terriers when I was a child and I have always had friends who have dogs.  I became involved in Showing dogs quite by accident when a friend of mine who had an Irish Setter Puppy had a riding accident and was unable to show her puppy.  She asked me to show him and her experience in showing, spanning over many years of showing and Junior Handlers, was invaluable to my learning.  We then purchased a Tibetan Terrier as my eldest son then 6 years old wanted to show dogs and was borrowing dogs of our friends.

I took part in the show handling section of the last big Jersey Junior Dog Handlers Easter show and managed not to disgrace myself.  I have two animal mad boys aged 8 and 11 both of whom have showed dogs and have done much of their instruction myself.  Both boys have had some small success and the eldest competed in the Junior Handlers section of the Richmond Dog Show gaining a Highly Commended.

I have been a member of the committee of the Kennel Club of Jersey, stepping in for a short time upon the resignation of the Secretary part way through a year.  I am keen to share my small amount of knowledge of training dogs with others although I am unable to commit to attending every week due to my children’s sporting commitments.  I am keenly aware that there are many people within the Jersey Junior Dog Handlers Club with much more experience than myself but have always been a firm believer in the common sense approach to training and of course asking those with more knowledge.

Liz Boschat (Secretary)

I have enjoyed dog shows for many years with my sister, who shows Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Both my daughters have handled dogs and have been members of JJDHA. I am enthusiastic and enjoy being part of a team that is providing top class training for dog owners from all walks of life. Although I do not have a dog at present, I would love one in the future when I am working less hours and could dedicate enough hours to caring for it.

Chris Cullen (Treasurer)

I lived in Ireland when I was growing up and we had a family dog, I then moved to Jersey when I was 18 and did not have any dogs for quite a few years. For the last 10 years I have again lived with dogs and now live with an Irish Terrier, Rio and my Border Collie, Riley.

I regularly show Riley at the shows in Jersey and Guernsey and have even shown him in England. I have also qualified him at the last 2 Channel Islands Dog of the Year shows.

I also compete with Riley at Obedience shows and he has also attained his Bronze and Silver Good Citizens awards and is currently training for Gold.

I really enjoy being part of the dog world and I am looking forward to being Treasurer of a long standing club.

John Cordial (Committee)

I have been a member of the Jersey Junior Dog Handlers for the last 3 years with my Labrador/Poodle cross & during this period with the help of our trainers have been able to attain the Bronze & Silver Good Citizen awarded by the Kennel Club for obedience.

My previous experience with handling dogs has been with a Wheaten Terrier, Labrador/Collie Cross & then two black Labrador Retrievers, the latter which I used to show as a member of the Jersey Dog Club (now the Kennel Club of Jersey).

My interest in being your committee member is to represent the interest of members with all types of dogs, with the objective of a well behaved, obedient companion and a contented owner whatever their aspirations for their dog.

I hope you will also experience the affection we have for all the dog fraternity and have a thoroughly enjoyable time with us.

Trainers

Carla Mackay (Obedience and Flyball)

I am a veterinary nurse, and have an interest in obedience and flyball, although I have also dabbled in agility and trick training. I have owned dogs since 2000 when I started with a rescue Papillion, and now own 3 lovely Border Collies.

Bobbie Martinez (Committee, Obedience)

At the moment, I am a full-time mum to four children, two dogs, five cats, a Stanley parakeet, leopard geckos and a flock of chickens. I have been brought up around animals, and I have learnt to respect and love them. My first love though are my dogs and even though I do not have a favourite breed (I was brought up being told you get the dog you need, not the dog you want) I am partial to Shih Tzus, Jack Russells and Rotties. I have been training dogs since the age of 15 and believe that all dogs should have basic manners like children!

Rachel Le Masurier (Obedience)

Dogs have always been a part of my family life and in 1984 I had my first dog of my own, she was a Papillon. Not only did I become a member of the Kennel Club of Jersey but I was also one of the original Jersey Junior Handlers.

Through spending my summers travelling around England attending UK championship shows with the Jersey Junior Handlers I was fortunate to meet Mark and Nancy Hutchings of the famous “Gerlil” Papillons. I would go every school holiday to their kennel in England and learn about showing, training, grooming, breeding dogs and judging and at the age of 15 went to work for them and I was there for 6 years.

In 2006 I became a trainer at the DOTC training classes and helped out as a trainer for show handling with Sue Whitehead and the Kennel Club of Jersey.

At present I have four dogs of my own and I enjoy showing them and handling other people’s dogs in Jersey, Europe and England.

Luciana Child-Villiers (Committee, Show Handling)

I have had dogs since I was little, starting with a Labrador and a Springer Spaniel, progressing to Dachshunds and now have my own 11 year old dog Toto.  I have a National Diploma in Animal Management and Foundation Degree in Animal Science (Welfare and Management) and love showing dogs at the Kennel Club of Jersey Shows.

I am very proud of the Jersey Junior Dog Handlers and very excited about the year ahead and what we as a committee can bring to you.

Tina Syvret (Obedience)

I am passionate about dogs having owned and trained dogs for around 20 years. I have tried my hand at obedience, working trials, showing and agility.  Most of my dogs have been rescues of all shapes and sizes which has lead me to find different ways of doing things, and an appreciation that there is no one method that suits all dogs.  My canine activities revolve around what my our legged family enjoy the most, and I am priviliged to share my life with 4 incredible friends at the moment.  We currently enjoy agility and good citizen training together, and I love the bond that working with my dogs brings.

Collette Allen (Show Handling)

I come from a farming family and I have been involved with dogs for thirty-two years. I am interested in Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs and show my dogs at the Kennel Club of Jersey shows.

I have been training Ringcraft/Show Training and Junior Handling for about fifteen years. As well as training at the Juniors I also train for the Kennel Club of Jersey.
